dArenberg Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier 2007 The vineyards and bushland that surround the d’Arenberg winery are home to the unique black and white native bird Kookaburra, famous for its distinctive laughing call. Much to the amusement of the family, Chester Osborn’s daughters, Alicia and Ruby, named their two wild pet Kookaburras the Laughing Magpies. If you give the wine a vigorous decanting you’ll see amongst the floral and vegetative earthy notes a dominance of white pepper with plum notes mixed with root vegetables such as parsnips and beetroot, along with hints of roasted black tea, black olives and edges of fragrant garden herbs. The palate is full flavoured with ripe juicy soft mouth-filling flavours suggesting beetroot juice, blueberries blackcurrants and red cherries with herbaceous edges that keep the palate in check.

dArenberg The Last Ditch Viognier 2008 Planted in the 19th century, down the bottom of the gully in a big ditch was a small block of Doradillo, which in 1995 became inhabited by Viognier. Last Ditch is a salubrious wine which receives the very best barrels, it simply blossoms on the palate and continues to linger. The palate is tightly structured and youthful with apricot, peach blossom, lime and orange peel initially present. As the wine opens up a wonderful honey character shows itself with candied ginger nuances.

Spice, red berry, supple fruit flavours and a soft finish here. Full fruit palate with berries, pepper and subtle use of oak, vibrant with violets and orchard blossoms, peppery overtones and layers of young complexity, bound together with excellent texture, softness and length. "One of the best examples of this blend under $15.

Heggies Vineyard Viognier A sumptuous wine full of delightful fragrances and an inimitable balance between earth and mature fruit, which previously claimed Hyatt Advertiser Winemakers Trophy, and has broken much ground as an emissary of the varietal. This was one of only two or three viogniers. The palate is round and luscious with the Heggies mineral texture. A relaxed and refreshing wine with a myriad flavours, it's a tad more steely and aromatic than most, an extremely welcome balance of fragrances and earthy characters.
