They are produced in the shed or garage of boutique winemakers dedicated to making small-volume wines of the highest quality. Green runner-bean and fine-toasted, French oak, cedar notes come through as the wine opens. The palate is ripe and has an impressive elegance upon entry and then you are struck with the overwhelming complexity and presence.

Evans Tate Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2008 The archetypal Margaret River complex red blend, fashioned to extravagant Bordelais styling by one of West Australia's dauntless winemakers. Evans & Tate command a wide expanse of source vineyards and mesoclimes developed in earlier times, which are now yielding vigorous, well endowed fruit. Dusty cedar notes from maturation in quality French oak provide additional complexity. Leabrook Estate Cabernet Franc The recent release of this wine follows on from the style set by the hugely successful previous vintage that achieved phenomenal Show success. Cabernet Franc is a cousin of the namesake Sauvignon and exhibits the structure of a Cabernet but with the added advantages of extra fruitiness and richness, especially on the middle palate. The Leabrook Cab Franc carries a rich mid weight fruitiness that enables it to be served with an extremely wide range of foods

Leabrook Estate Cabernet Merlot The wine is a result of a perfect vintage with a long cool summer enabling full ripening and concentrated flavours. The classic blend of Bordeaux varieties has resulted in the Merlot contributing fruitiness and softness on the middle palate, Cabernet Franc with body and fruit later on the palate, finishing with elegant Cabernet Sauvignon cassis and black currant fruit. In its youth it is showing typical Cabernet Sauvignon characters of blackcurrant (cassis), prunes and sweet oak that linger on the palate. The firm tannins add to the outstanding structure of the wine and you can look forward to enjoying it after a further 3-10 years ageing.

Madfish Premium Red 2007 A mostly Cabernet wine with smaller components of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, from a corner of Australia that does the Medoc blends so uncannily well. Superbly balanced, highly polished, affable and quaffable, assembled into a wine that's intense and complete. The palate is full and ripe with sweet berry fruits and well balanced acid and oak. A long finish with polished tannins.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Cabernet Merlot 2007 A key to the success of Ribbon Vale is an astute understanding of how tannins develop during skin contact after fermentation. Through tasting, the right balance between fruit flavours, tannin and the correct time to press is struck. There are also the essential Ribbon Vale leather and earth notes, plus additional complexity of sealing wax and camphor. Oak characters are very restrained and give a light tarry background.

Nepenthe The Fugue The predominant variety in the blend has always been Cabernet sauvignon; fragrant, bright in colour and aroma, yet tannic and savoury. The Fugue benefits from the spice and zest of Cabernet franc, and the sweet earthiness of Merlot. The wine’s distinct mintiness is both a varietal and regional character.
